What is the best AI voice agent for restaurants in 2026?

The phone rings in the middle of the rush and nobody can grab it. An AI voice agent takes the booking or the takeout order for you.

Friday, 7:45 p.m. Every table is full, the kitchen is slammed, and your host is seating a party of eight. The phone rings three times in a row. Each missed call is a four-top booking somewhere else, or a pickup order that never happens. An AI voice agent answers instead: it handles the routine questions (hours, menu, parking, allergens), books the table against live availability, or takes the takeout order and sends it to the kitchen.

The short answer. Fonio scores highest overall: a restaurant-specific product, 1,000 minutes from €99 a month on annual billing, bookings and orders in one agent, though it sells in euros and fits European restaurants best. ElevenLabs powers SevenRooms Voice AI, already live in 600+ restaurants. Zenchef Call AI is the easy pick if your book runs on Zenchef. Slang AI is the US specialist for groups on OpenTable, SevenRooms or Resy. Retell AI plugs into Toast, Square and Clover if you have a developer.

What other lists skip: most are written by a vendor that ranks itself first, and most restaurant specialists hide their pricing. We only ranked tools with a public price, did the math at three call volumes, and listed the failure modes that show up on a busy Friday night.

5 AI voice agents for restaurants, compared

This ranking is for an independent restaurant, a small chain or a multi-unit group that wants its calls answered, tables booked or takeout orders taken, with a clean handoff to staff. Every ranked tool describes a restaurant use on its own site and shows a public price. Loman, Hostie, Bookline and SevenRooms Voice AI don't publish a number, so they sit further down, unranked.

How we scored

How we compared and scored

This page is for the operator who loses calls during service: a neighborhood pizzeria doing a lot of pickup, a fine-dining room that still books by phone, or a group of three to fifteen locations. It doesn't cover quick-service chains buying drive-thru voice ordering through an RFP.

The core test fits in one line: the agent has to pick up, take a booking or an order, and hand off to a person. It also has to show a restaurant use on the vendor's own site, a dedicated page or a native reservation or POS integration. General-purpose agents like Bland AI or Vapi, which rank well on our general AI voice agent ranking, don't describe a restaurant use, so they aren't ranked here. The second filter is price: no public number, no rank.

Each tool is scored on the five criteria from our full reviews, weighted equally. The reason is consistency: ElevenLabs already has a full review on our site, and its score has to match here, criterion by criterion. Tools that appear on our general ranking keep their scores too. Features look first at bookings, takeout, changes and cancellations, then languages. Integrations look at the reservation book (OpenTable, Resy, SevenRooms, Zenchef), then the POS.

We also read public feedback from operators and diners, starting with the negative: wrong orders, loops with no human, bots that didn't say they were bots. Independent reviews are thin. Some restaurant specialists have one review, or none, on the big review sites. We say so on each card.

Best overall

Fonio

4.4/5

Fonio is the most complete ready-made option we found. It has a dedicated restaurant product that covers both jobs the phone does: reservations, with a live check on open tables, and takeout or phone orders, sent to the kitchen or the POS. In between, the agent clears the calls that clog the line: hours, menu, prices, allergens, parking. It passes along what it shouldn't handle, such as a complaint, a catering request or a party of twenty.

Pricing is built around call volume. Solo is €119 a month, or €99 billed annually, for 1,000 minutes and up to 20 calls a day. Team is €359 (€299 annually) for 3,600 minutes, up to 100 calls a day and three calls at once. Scale is custom above that. A restaurant taking 400 two-minute calls a month fits inside Solo on paper. The vendor's examples show English, French, German and Dutch.

The catch: Fonio talks about connecting to your reservation software, your POS and your kitchen display, but names none of them. Not OpenTable, not Toast. Ask for a demo where the agent books a real table in your real book. Solo can't take two calls at once, so on a Friday at 7:30 p.m. the second caller waits. There's no free trial listed, only a 30-day money-back guarantee, and prices are in euros, excluding VAT. Restaurant reviewers praise fewer missed calls during the rush; reviewers in other industries mention heavy accents and specialist terms that don't transcribe well, which can hit dish names.

Tip: load your menu in the knowledge base the way guests say it out loud ("the four-cheese", not "PZ-4F"), with one line per major allergen. The agent answers better and hands off when it isn't sure.

Standout features
  • Bookings and takeout orders
  • 1,000 minutes from €99 a month annually
  • Menu, hours and allergens in the knowledge base
+Pros
  • ✓Dedicated restaurant product
  • ✓Public pricing, minutes included
  • ✓30-day money-back guarantee
−Cons
  • ✗No named reservation or POS integration
  • ✗No concurrent calls on Solo
  • ✗Euro pricing only
Verdict

The best ready-made pick for an independent restaurant, especially in Europe. Move to Team as soon as the phone rings twice in the same minute during service.

Best for SevenRooms venues

ElevenLabs Agents

4.2/5

ElevenLabs is best known for synthetic voices, and it's also the engine behind SevenRooms Voice AI. That agent books tables in real time inside SevenRooms, follows the venue's rules (time slots, party size, deposits, notes), recognizes returning guests and hands off to staff. The two companies report 600+ restaurants using it, 400,000+ calls handled, and roughly one call in five coming in after hours.

Outside SevenRooms, you can build your own agent on ElevenLabs Agents. Plans run from $0 for 15 minutes to $99 a month for 1,238 minutes, with extra minutes at $0.08. ElevenLabs doesn't charge for telephony: if you connect a Twilio number, Twilio bills you directly. The language model is billed on top, depending on which one you pick.

The catch: outside SevenRooms, nothing is pre-built for restaurants. Someone has to write the call flow, connect the book over the API and run test calls. SevenRooms doesn't publish the price or the languages of its voice agent, so ask them. Our full ElevenLabs review gives it 4.2 out of 5 with support at 3.4: public reviews mention billing complaints and credits burning faster than expected.

Tip: if an integrator builds it, have them cap call length and pick a fast model. On the phone, an instant answer beats a clever one, and a takeout order rarely runs past four minutes.

Standout features
  • Powers SevenRooms Voice AI
  • Most natural voices in this ranking
  • No telephony fee from ElevenLabs
+Pros
  • ✓Free plan to try it
  • ✓Native bookings for SevenRooms venues
  • ✓Minutes included in every plan
−Cons
  • ✗Nothing pre-built outside SevenRooms
  • ✗LLM billed on top
  • ✗Public billing complaints
Verdict

The best voice engine here, but a building block, not a finished product. Obvious on SevenRooms, integrators only otherwise.

3
Best if you run Zenchef

Zenchef Call AI

4.1/5

Zenchef is a restaurant reservation platform based in Europe, with self-serve activation of its agent in France and Belgium. Call AI, its voice agent, picks up around the clock, uses your restaurant's information and writes the booking straight into Zenchef. That's the whole point: no integration to build, no double entry, and the slots offered on the phone follow the same availability rules as your website.

According to the vendor's documentation, it's an add-on to your Zenchef plan. You get a dedicated number and forward your public line to it. When a slot needs a card hold or a deposit, the agent texts a payment link instead of taking card details by voice. When you're full, it offers other times or transfers the call. One Zenchef customer says 30% of its calls are booking changes, which shows how much phone time is at stake.

The catch: when we compared, the vendor's help docs said the agent couldn't yet modify or cancel a booking, and offered one default voice. Check both in a demo, because changes are a big share of calls. Zenchef lists €99 a month with no detail on tax or locations, so confirm what it covers before you sign. It doesn't take takeout orders: it's a booking tool.

Tip: keep your existing number on Google and your website, and forward it to Call AI only after four rings and outside service hours. Regulars still reach your team; the agent catches the rest.

Standout features
  • Bookings written into Zenchef during the call
  • Payment link by text for card holds
  • Same availability rules as your website
+Pros
  • ✓No integration to build
  • ✓Built for European restaurants
  • ✓Offers other times when you're full
−Cons
  • ✗Zenchef customers only
  • ✗Changes and cancellations to verify
  • ✗No takeout orders
Verdict

The obvious choice if Zenchef already runs your book. Nobody should switch reservation platforms just for it.

Best for US restaurant groups

Slang AI

3.8/5

Slang AI is the best-known US specialist for restaurant phones. Its sweet spot is reservations and events: it connects to OpenTable, SevenRooms, Yelp and Resy for tables, and to Tripleseat and Perfect Venue for private dining. The vendor promises setup in under 30 minutes and lists no cap on calls.

Pricing is per location: Core from $399 a month, Premium from $599, Enterprise custom. Spanish is included in Core, which matters in plenty of US markets. Premium adds 97 languages with automatic detection and mid-call switching. A 14-location group quoted in the trade press pays about $450 per location per month, and says it freed its hosts from the phone at a site that took 250 calls a week.

The catch: it's priced for groups and high-end rooms, and that's the main criticism in the press. Its pricing page doesn't put takeout ordering front and center, so check that in a demo if pickup is your main revenue. Independent reviews are almost nonexistent: one review on a major review site when we compared. You're buying on the vendor's word and references.

Tip: if you have a private dining room, look hard at the Tripleseat or Perfect Venue connection. Event inquiries often come in by phone, and that's where a specialist agent earns the most per call.

Standout features
  • OpenTable, SevenRooms, Resy, Yelp
  • Private events: Tripleseat, Perfect Venue
  • Spanish in Core, 97 languages in Premium
+Pros
  • ✓Reservations specialist
  • ✓No call cap listed
  • ✓Fast setup promised
−Cons
  • ✗From $399 a month per location
  • ✗Very few independent reviews
  • ✗Takeout ordering not front and center
Verdict

A real specialist at a specialist's price. A strong fit for a group on OpenTable or SevenRooms, too expensive for a corner pizzeria.

Best with a developer

Retell AI

3.6/5

Retell AI is a platform for building your own voice agent, and one of the few that publishes a full restaurant page. It covers takeout and delivery orders with menu modifiers, bookings with text confirmation, changes and cancellations, allergen questions, batch reminder calls, handoff with a call transcript, payment by text link and multi-location setups.

The integrations are the real difference: Toast, Square and Clover on the POS side, OpenTable and Resy for reservations, plus Zapier, Make, n8n, Twilio and Cal.com. Pricing is per minute, from $0.07 to $0.31 depending on the LLM and voice, with 20 concurrent calls included. During the Friday rush, nobody hears a busy signal.

The catch: nothing works until someone builds it. Public reviews describe 1.5 to 2.5 seconds of latency with some models (a silence callers notice). The restaurant page doesn't list languages, and the real per-minute cost depends on the model and voice you pick.

Tip: have the agent read every order back, modifiers included, before confirming, then text a summary. That's the best guard against wrong orders, the most common diner complaint about phone AI.

Standout features
  • Toast, Square, Clover, OpenTable, Resy
  • 20 concurrent calls included
  • Payment by text link
+Pros
  • ✓Most complete restaurant feature list
  • ✓Full integration freedom
  • ✓Can be the cheapest at volume
−Cons
  • ✗Needs a developer
  • ✗Latency depends on the model
  • ✗Languages not listed on the restaurant page
Verdict

The most powerful option if someone can build it. Without a developer, look at Slang AI or Fonio instead.

True cost

What an AI voice agent really costs a restaurant

Vendors charge per month, per minute or per location. Here's the monthly cost of the agent alone, at official prices, for three restaurant sizes. We assume two-minute calls on average: a booking or an hours question rarely runs longer.

Café: 150 calls, 300 minutes

ElevenLabs Creator: $22 plus 25 extra minutes at $0.08, so $24, plus the LLM and a phone number. Retell AI: $21 to $93. Fonio Solo: €119 (€99 annually), with 700 minutes to spare. Zenchef Call AI: €99 if you're already on Zenchef. Slang AI: $399, priced for a bigger room.

Pizzeria with pickup: 400 calls, 800 minutes

Retell AI: $56 to $248, with 20 concurrent calls. ElevenLabs Pro: $99 for 1,238 minutes, plus the LLM and telephony. Slang AI Core: $399. Fonio Team: €359 (€299 annually) for three calls at once; Solo is cheaper but takes one call at a time. At this volume, concurrency matters more than the per-minute rate.

Group of 3 locations: 1,500 calls, 3,000 minutes

Slang AI Core: 3 times $399, so $1,197. ElevenLabs Scale: $299 for 3,738 minutes, plus the LLM and the build. Retell AI: $210 to $930, plus setup. Fonio Team: €359 (€299 annually) for 3,600 shared minutes and 3 numbers. Zenchef Call AI: ask whether the €99 is per location.

  • How many calls can the agent take at once on your plan?
  • Does the booking land in your actual book, or in a calendar?
  • Can the agent change and cancel a booking?
  • Does the order reach the kitchen or POS, or just a text message?
  • What does a minute cost past your plan?
  • Does the agent hand off the moment a guest asks for a person?

Other voice agents worth knowing

These names come up when operators shop for phone AI. They aren't ranked because they don't publish a price, or don't describe a restaurant use. Here's when they're worth a call.

01

Loman: the widest POS coverage

Quote-only

Loman connects to eight POS systems (Toast, SpotOn, Clover, Shift4, Square, Aloha, Olo, Stream) and to OpenTable and Resy. The full plan takes pickup and delivery orders, bookings and secure phone payments, with upselling, and answers up to 50 calls at once. No per-minute fees, but pricing is on request only. It had zero reviews on a major review site when we compared, and press coverage includes diners who got the wrong order with no refund.

Hostie: a lesson in disclosure

Quote-only

Hostie answers phones for San Francisco restaurants. One manager told the local press it handles almost every question gracefully and books more tables after hours. The same coverage reported that the bot first didn't say it was a bot, nor that it took notes, and an ad later sought callers for a legal claim. It now tells callers it takes notes. AInora is a Lithuanian vendor that names TheFork, Zenchef and SevenRooms as integrations. Its agent takes, changes and cancels bookings, handles allergens and special requests, runs a text-based waitlist, sends pickup orders to the kitchen or POS and collects private-event details. It introduces itself as an AI and hosts data in the EU. No POS is named, and pricing is quote-only.

Famulor books against live availability, answers menu and allergen questions (and flags staff when unsure), takes orders and calls or messages guests on the day to confirm. It connects to calendars, nine CRMs, Stripe and an API. Its own FAQ says slots are only real when it's wired to your reservation system. Free trial, no readable price.

Aircall and CloudTalk: generalists

No restaurant flow

These business phone systems sell an AI voice agent with public pricing, but neither describes a restaurant use. If your phones already run on Aircall, its agent costs $0.49 a minute after 100 free minutes at signup and 50 a month (our review: 3.2 out of 5). CloudTalk lists an AI receptionist at $99 a month for 200 minutes (3.3 out of 5). They take messages and appointments, not a booking in your book. Traps

What makes a restaurant voice agent go wrong

These failures show up in operator and diner feedback, and none of them appears on a pricing page.

01

Assuming the booking lands in your book

Integration

Most agents promise to "take reservations". Many actually put them in a calendar, or text you a note someone has to retype. Native writes into the book exist for SevenRooms (its own agent), Zenchef (Call AI) and, through integrations, OpenTable and Resy on Slang AI and Retell AI. For everything else, ask for a demo on your real book, with a real table.

Check
The booking appears in your book
02

Letting modifiers slip

Orders

In Boston-area pizzerias using an AI phone agent, diners described getting marinated chicken instead of plain, with no call back and no refund, and stopped ordering. The manager said complaints dropped over time, but of 1,700+ Google reviews, the 20 that mention the AI are mostly one and two stars. Read-back and a text summary cut most of these errors.

Fix
Read-back plus text summary
03

Trapping the caller in a loop

Guests

One diner with a missing salad described being stuck in a loop with no way to reach a person. Simple rule: the moment a caller says "let me talk to someone", or it's a complaint, the call goes to staff or to a guaranteed callback.

Setting
Instant handoff on request
04

Hiding that it's an AI

Trust

The Hostie story shows what happens when guests find out later. In the EU, the AI Act has required disclosure since 2026; in the US, it's the safe default. One line at the start does it: "Hi, you've reached the restaurant's virtual assistant, I can book your table."

Do
Introduce it as a virtual assistant
05

Taking card numbers by voice

Payments

A card number read out loud ends up in a transcript. For a hold or a deposit, use a payment link sent by text, as Zenchef Call AI and Retell AI do, or take payment at pickup.

Do
Payment link by text
06

Signing a year before a single service

Contract

At one restaurant AI vendor, a customer says they paid £3,500 for a service that never went live and was never refunded; others describe pushy sales and support run through a community chat. Prefer month-to-month or a guarantee, and run the agent through a Friday night before committing.

Do
One full service before annual
Tips

Make your voice agent work like a great host

A few settings that make the difference, whatever tool you pick.

01

Use it for overflow, not first ring

Setting

Forward to the agent when nobody picks up after four rings, and after hours. Off-peak, regulars reach your staff. During the rush and overnight, the agent takes the rest. You burn fewer minutes and keep the relationship with your best guests.

Gain
Fewer minutes, no lost calls
02

Split bookings from orders

Choice

Booking a table and ordering a pizza are different jobs. A fine-dining room needs an agent that writes into the book and handles deposits: SevenRooms, Slang AI or Zenchef Call AI. A pizzeria needs one that gets modifiers right and talks to the POS: Retell AI or Loman. Pick on your main need, not on the feature list.

Question
More bookings or more orders?
03

Turn on Spanish if your guests need it

Languages

Slang AI includes Spanish in Core, and Premium switches languages mid-call. If a meaningful share of your callers prefer Spanish, test the voice in Spanish before you sign, with real dish names and a noisy line.

Test
Your menu, in each language
04

Call it ten times before your guests do

Check

Before you go live, call with real cases: a two-top tonight, a party of fifteen, a change, a cancellation, a gluten question, a caller with a heavy accent, a call with kitchen noise behind it. Each time, check that the booking shows up in your book and the order reaches the right place.

FAQ

Your questions about AI voice agents for restaurants

  • Can an AI voice agent take restaurant reservations?

Yes, it's the most common use. The agent checks open tables, offers another time if you're full and confirms by text. The real question is where the booking lands: natively in SevenRooms, Zenchef, OpenTable or Resy with the right tool, or in a calendar someone has to copy over.

  • Can it take takeout orders and send them to the kitchen?

Yes. Retell AI and Loman connect to Toast, Square and Clover, and Fonio sends orders to the kitchen or POS. Always have the agent read the order back before confirming: modifiers and add-ons cause most mistakes.

  • Does it work with Toast, OpenTable or Resy?

Often, yes. Retell AI lists Toast, Square, Clover, OpenTable and Resy. Slang AI connects to OpenTable, SevenRooms, Resy and Yelp. Loman covers eight POS systems. Check the exact integration in a demo, not on a logo wall.

  • How much does an AI phone agent cost a restaurant?

From under $100 to about $600 a month per location. Retell AI runs $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, ElevenLabs Agents starts at $6 a month plus the LLM, and Slang AI starts at $399 per location. In Europe, Fonio starts at €99 a month on annual billing.

  • Will guests know they're talking to an AI?

They should. In the EU, the AI Act has required it since 2026, and in the US it's the safe default after restaurants were criticized for bots that didn't say so. One greeting line handles it, and most guests just want their table booked.

  • Can the agent take a card for a deposit?

Yes, but not by voice. Good tools text a payment link during the call: Zenchef Call AI does it for card holds, Retell AI for orders, Loman for phone payments. Never let a guest read a card number to an AI.

  • What happens when three people call during the rush?

It depends on the plan. Retell AI includes 20 concurrent calls, Loman up to 50, Slang AI lists no cap, Fonio Team takes three and Fonio Solo one. For a pickup-heavy Friday night, concurrency matters more than price per minute.

  • Will an AI voice agent replace my host?

No. It takes the calls your host can't take while seating guests. It won't read a room, calm an upset regular or handle a tricky large party well. Its job is the missed calls, the after-hours calls and the repeat questions.
