What is the best TMS software in 2026?

It depends on your freight. A shipper booking a few LTL loads a week and a global manufacturer running ocean, rail and truckload don't need the same system.

A TMS (transportation management system) plans, books, tracks and audits your freight. Short answer: Cargoson if you're a mid-size shipper who wants a published price, Kuebix if you need a free TMS to rate and book loads, Oracle Transportation Management or Infios if you run global multimodal freight. The rest of the page explains why, and what makes a rollout fail.

Read the "who it's for" column before the score. A brokerage TMS won't run your plant's shipping dock, and an enterprise suite is overkill for 50 loads a month.

Our method

How we compared and scored

We compared each TMS on its official pages (plans, features, integrations, stated rollout time) and on user reviews posted on review sites. The score out of 5 is a weighted average of five criteria. Fit for the target profile weighs most, because a TMS built for the wrong job is useless at any price. Integrations come next: carrier connectivity, telematics and ERP data are where most rollouts stall.

We don't score SAP TM: we couldn't read its official page, and we don't rank a tool without checking what it does.

  1. Fit for the target profileThe central criterion: does the tool cover the core jobs of its profile? For a shipper: carrier selection, rating, tendering, tracking, freight audit.
    30 %
  2. Pricing transparencyA public grid with amounts scores highest; an entry price alone scores lower; price only in a demo scores 2.
    15 %
  3. Integrations and networkERP, carrier and telematics connections: that's where projects slip, hence the weight.
    25 %
  4. Time to go liveRollout time the vendor states, setup fees, need for an implementation partner.
    15 %
  5. User feedbackWhat users say on review sites and forums; 3.5 when public feedback is too thin to call.

1
Best TMS for mid-size shippers

Cargoson

4.3/5

Cargoson pitches itself as the TMS for manufacturers and wholesalers, with a clear line: "Your rates. Your carriers. Not a middleman." You keep your contracts; the tool centralizes carrier rates, compares them per shipment, books and tracks. The vendor lists 1,000+ plug-and-play carrier integrations and a CO₂ estimate per shipment.

It's also the only TMS on this list with a full public price grid, users and shipment volumes included.

Standout features
  • Public price grid: you know the bill before the demo
  • 1,000+ carriers already connected
  • CO₂ estimate per shipment
+Pros
  • ✓Your negotiated rates stay yours
  • ✓Ratings around 4.8 out of 5 on about 50 reviews
  • ✓Clear upgrade path as volume grows
−Cons
  • ✗One-time setup fee on every tier, amount not published
  • ✗Small local carriers without EDI aren't always integrated
  • ✗No free trial
Verdict

The most predictable pick for a mid-size shipper. Send your carrier list before the demo: you'll know right away which ones are connected and which stay on email.

2
Best for multimodal shippers on SAP

Alpega TMS

4.0/5

Alpega TMS is built for shippers across all modes: road, rail, sea and air. It connects natively to SAP S/4HANA, offers templates for SAP ECC, Oracle and D365, and tracks freight from pickup to proof of delivery.

Its edge is the group's network: more than 80,000 vetted carriers and over 350,000 freight offers a day in 29 countries. Alpega states go-live in about three months and a first module in about four weeks on average. It's a Challenger in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for TMS.

Standout features
  • Native SAP S/4HANA connection
  • 80,000+ vetted carriers
  • First module in about four weeks
+Pros
  • ✓All four modes in one tool
  • ✓Short stated rollout for the category
  • ✓Access to the group's freight exchange for capacity
−Cons
  • ✗No published price
  • ✗Strongest in Europe
  • ✗Little public user feedback on the TMS itself
Verdict

A strong pick if you live in SAP and ship across Europe. Ask for a quote on a single first module (tendering or booking): it's the fastest way to judge the tool on your real freight.

3
Best free TMS for small shippers

Kuebix

3.8/5

Kuebix, part of Trimble, is the only official free TMS we found. Free Shipper lets you rate and book LTL, truckload, parcel and intermodal shipments. Business Pro adds unlimited shipment management, with a 14-day free trial; Enterprise sits above it.

Standout features
  • A real free plan, not a trial
  • LTL, TL, parcel and intermodal rating
  • 14-day trial on Business Pro
+Pros
  • ✓Zero cost to start comparing and booking
  • ✓Fast to set up
  • ✓Upgrade path inside the same tool
−Cons
  • ✗One login per site for multi-site shippers, per user reviews
  • ✗Some users report NMFC class errors with certain carriers
  • ✗Sales follow-ups to move you to a paid plan
Verdict

Start here if your budget is zero and you ship mostly in the US. Double-check freight class on every LTL quote: that's where users report the costly surprises.

4
Best network for large shippers

Transporeon

3.8/5

Transporeon brings together more than 1,500 shippers and retailers and over 210,000 carriers. The platform comes in modules: a freight marketplace (Freight Marketplace), execution and visibility, dock and yard management, and freight audit.

Standout features
  • 210,000+ carriers already on the platform
  • Built-in dock scheduling
  • Freight audit module
+Pros
  • ✓Your carriers are often already there
  • ✓Covers tender to invoice
  • ✓Modules sold separately
−Cons
  • ✗No published price
  • ✗Built for high volume
  • ✗European center of gravity
Verdict

The pick for large shippers that want a ready-made network. If dock congestion is your main pain, start with that module.

Best for global enterprises

Oracle Transportation Management

3.7/5

Oracle Transportation Management is part of Oracle Fusion Cloud Supply Chain and Manufacturing. Oracle states its SCM suite is a Leader in five Gartner Magic Quadrant reports, transportation management systems included.

This is global planning and execution, not something you switch on in a few weeks: budget for an implementation partner.

Standout features
  • Gartner Leader for TMS
  • Native to Oracle Fusion Cloud
  • Global multimodal planning
+Pros
  • ✓Deepest functionality on the list
  • ✓One suite with the Oracle ERP
  • ✓Handles complex international flows
−Cons
  • ✗No published price
  • ✗Long project, partner required
  • ✗Overkill below a few thousand shipments a month
Verdict

Worth a look only if your company already runs on Oracle. Otherwise integration costs eat the gains fast.

Best for shippers, 3PLs and brokers

Descartes

3.7/5

Descartes sells a multimodal TMS to optimize, automate and execute shipments across all modes, for shippers, 3PLs and freight brokers. Brokers get a dedicated TMS through Aljex. Descartes is explicit about pricing drivers: shipment volume, modes, geographic scope and the capabilities you pick.

Standout features
  • Dedicated broker TMS (Aljex)
  • All modes
  • Clear explanation of what drives price
+Pros
  • ✓One vendor for shippers and brokers
  • ✓Strong North American footprint
  • ✓Modular buying
−Cons
  • ✗No published price
  • ✗Several acquired products under one brand
  • ✗Less present in Europe
Verdict

A solid pick for North American brokers and 3PLs. Ask which product line (Descartes core or Aljex) you'd actually be on.

7
Best for multimodal optimization at scale

Infios Transportation Management

3.6/5

Infios is the new name of Körber Supply Chain Software. Infios Transportation Management connects planning and execution across every mode and region, with freight audit and payment, claims management, vehicle routing and optimization. Infios was named a Leader in the IDC MarketScape for TMS in 2026.

Standout features
  • Freight audit and claims built in
  • All modes and regions
  • IDC MarketScape TMS Leader in 2026
+Pros
  • ✓Broad feature set in one product
  • ✓Routing and optimization included
  • ✓Rules-based AI for carrier selection and rerouting
−Cons
  • ✗No published price
  • ✗A broad enterprise suite: plan real training time for planners
  • ✗Rebranding means older reviews use the old name
Verdict

A serious enterprise option. Ask for a reference customer of your size, and budget real training time for your planners.

Best for US shippers building one platform

Shipwell

3.6/5

Shipwell gives shippers and their teams tools to run their supply chains, and lets you start with one solution or bring the entire operation onto one platform. Its pricing page offers a demo rather than a price.

Standout features
  • Start with one module
  • Built for shipper teams
  • US focus
+Pros
  • ✓Modular entry point
  • ✓One platform as you grow
  • ✓Shipper-first design
−Cons
  • ✗No published price
  • ✗Thin public detail on plans
  • ✗Little relevance outside the US
Verdict

Put it on your shortlist if you're a US shipper outgrowing spreadsheets. Ask which module you can go live with first.

Three other TMS worth knowing

These tools matter, but we don't rank them for the US market: we couldn't read the official page, or they're built mainly for European carriers.

01

SAP Transportation Management: the SAP module

SAP ecosystem

SAP TM is the transportation module of the SAP ecosystem. We couldn't read its official page, so we don't score it. What implementation partners keep saying: integration and master data cleanup cost more than the license. If you're on SAP, compare it with Alpega TMS, which connects natively to S/4HANA.

Companies already on SAP
Limit
Heavy integration project
02

Dashdoc: the carrier-side TMS from Europe

Carriers

Dashdoc is built for carriers and freight forwarders: orders, real-time planning, eCMR (the electronic consignment note), e-invoicing and a driver app. The vendor reports more than 2,300 transport professionals on the platform. It's a European tool, useful if you run trucks there.

European carriers
Limit

03

Generix TMS: inside a supply chain suite

Suite

Generix offers a TMS for freight and loading decisions inside a supply chain suite that handles more than 5 million transport operations a year across the platform. It makes sense if your warehouse already runs on Generix.

Who for
Generix WMS users
Limit
Weaker as a standalone
Not a TMS

Three tools people confuse with a TMS and that complement one

These show up in every TMS list, but none runs your orders end to end. They plug in next to your TMS.

01

Shippeo: real-time visibility

Visibility

Shippeo tracks shipments in real time by connecting shippers, carriers and systems across road, rail, sea and air. Users' tip: before signing, check that your subcontractors' GPS providers are already integrated, or every new carrier takes time to onboard.

Role
Real-time tracking
Limit
Depends on carriers' telematics
02

Upply: benchmark your rates

Market rates

Upply compares your freight rates to market standards and runs a marketplace with more than 2,000 connected carriers and shippers. It invites you to plug in your TMS: it's a procurement tool, not a TMS.

Role
Rate benchmark
Limit
No execution
03

ORTEC: plan and optimize

Optimization

ORTEC plans and optimizes your network from strategic design to daily execution, with products for B2B delivery, intercompany flows and home delivery. If what you need is routes, see our ranking of route optimization software.

Role
Route and network optimization
Limit
No freight audit or tendering

What a TMS really costs

Only one vendor on this list publishes a full grid. For the rest, you need to know how they bill to compare quotes. We see four models.

Free, with limits

Kuebix Free Shipper costs nothing for rating and booking. The catch is upsell pressure and missing management features.

Per shipment and per user

Cargoson bundles shipments (100, 1,000, 3,000 a month) and users (2, 5, 10) into each tier. It's the easiest model to budget.

By scope

Descartes prices on volume, modes, geography and capabilities. Expect the same logic at Oracle, Infios and Transporeon.

Hidden costs

Setup fees (one-time on every Cargoson tier), EDI connections, and on enterprise projects ERP integration that often costs more than the license.
  • Get the setup fee in writing, separate from the subscription.
  • Price each EDI connection with your top three carriers.
  • Send your carrier list before the demo.
  • Check that carrier telematics feed tracking.
  • Ask for time to the first module in production, not the full project.
  • Confirm whether one login covers several sites.
FAQ · 6 questions

TMS software · FAQ

  • Is there a free TMS?
Yes: Kuebix Free Shipper, from Trimble, lets small shippers rate and book LTL, truckload, parcel and intermodal for $0. It's the only official free TMS we found. Expect calls about upgrading to Business Pro.
  • What's the difference between a TMS and a WMS?
A TMS manages freight moving between places (carrier, rate, tracking, audit). A WMS manages what happens inside the warehouse (stock, picking, packing). Most mid-size shippers end up needing both, connected.
  • How much does a TMS cost?
From $0 (Kuebix Free Shipper) to $199 a month billed annually for Cargoson Basic, up to six-figure enterprise projects. Most vendors quote in a demo, and setup fees and integration often matter more than the subscription.
  • How long does a TMS implementation take?
From a few weeks to several months. Alpega states about four weeks for a first module and three months to go live. An enterprise TMS wired into the ERP takes much longer, because integration and master data cleanup weigh more than the tool itself.
  • Do freight brokers need a different TMS?
Usually yes. Brokers manage both customers and carriers, so they need load management, carrier settlement and margins per load. Descartes sells a dedicated broker TMS through Aljex.
  • Is Shippeo a TMS?
No. Shippeo provides real-time freight visibility and plugs in next to your TMS. It doesn't pick carriers or audit invoices.
